VB Previz #42 – New Clothes

OMG Van wrote me TWELVE pages about this Supremes song “The Happening!” I think the idea is that Allan Kaprow invented “The Happening” but it got so huge in the 60’s it lost it’s meaning, so he walked away from what most people would call “success” and created the smaller, more personal “Action.” She says Kaprow’s Actions were less obviously or outwardly “Art,” which allowed them to be more deeply “Art” experiences in the end.

Happy New Year You Guys!!!

I’m SO excited about 2011! And here’s our first performance, just 2 weeks from today!

I know! Some of you thought that VB23 – New Clothes was supposed to be December 4th. Oopsy! It sorta got changed! 😛

It actually got changed just because we were just so overloaded in December. I guess you guys know that Van teaches at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, but IDK if you heard that one of the other art faculty fell and broke her shoulder (ouch, ouch, ouch! 🙁 and her doc said she’s out for 8 to 18 weeks. So V had a lot of extra work covering classes.

I’m still a nurse at BC Women’s Hospital. No extra shifts for me. Just the normal crazy schedule.

So, anyways, VB23, the last performance of 2010 has become the first performance of 2011. Van says it’s adapted from an Allan Kaprow piece called Match.

She talked about it a little bit in her conversation with Maurizio Cattelan:

I don’t know if she’ll really go thru with it, but Van says she wants this year to be simpler, more personal, “More Allan.” She wants to try to pay more attention to life and worry a lot less about politics and personalities from art galleries or Linden Lab or anybody else.

So she’s dragging us off to a New Grid, “InWorldz” to start the New Year off with some New Clothes. And just like the 1975 Allan Kaprow piece Match, we’re going to share clothes with each other. We’re going to have lots of bras and panties for everyone (she never tells me what the guys are supposed to wear! O_o

But only one blouse and one pair of shorts. We’ll all stand in a circle on the circle shaped island. Each person will have a turn to receive the blouse and shorts, put them on and then say something about New Clothes/New Year. You can just say sort of what they said in Match, New Clothes, And It’s A Perfect Fit. Or else you can say anything else you want.

Then you take the clothes off and pass them to the next person till we pass them to everyone in the circle.
