The sheer number of anthropology PhD candidates walking around the many 3D MMO’s should suggest that there’s something more powerful going on than simply the idle passing of hours. Whether physical or virtual we human beings are community creating creatures. When your identity doesn’t sync with the dominant identity in your physical neighborhood, virtual community can reach across geography to create new communities.
