HIGH SOCIETY GIRL

I came across High Society Girl on the front cover of a property magazine delivered to my office.  The image was too tempting and had to be drawn before being recycled.

The only reason the image was on the front cover was because there was an article regarding high society living.  The rest of the magazine was uninteresting and features properties in Central London that no one can afford.

Boy, I do draw a hell-of-a-lot-of girls but I think that most artists like to draw the figure of a woman and it’s a good way for a female, I think, to express feelings in her drawings. Yes, I do want to be her, Bettie Page and Wonder Woman!  I did want to be a dress designer from the age of about 8 to 8½ and used to sketch images just like this one.

I didn’t draw the full image; cutting her dress off halfway otherwise I would have had to draw everything really tiny to fit in the very long flowing dress.  I added a smoky background and changed the dress slightly using only shades of black and white.  My favorite tools of pens, highlighter and the water color brush.

A fellow Draw Something friend of mine, from time-to-time also draws some lovely ladies in cocktail dresses.  Most probably all waiting for a nice dry martini or two or three like me 🙂  From elegant invitations to the finest cocktails – summer soirée.

I used to draw all the time... then there was a very long gap till I acquired a Draw Something addiction that began in March 2012 which threw me into the world of digital drawing. I now mainly use a drawing app called Sketch Club and have recently created a website for a drawing game my friend and I have invented called Monkey Side Bars. Monkey Side Bars is a twice-a-week drawing game where you are challenged to a piece of art on a specific theme. Players take turns selecting the theme for each round. On the reveal date for each round, we co-ordinate a mass posting to Instagram simultaneously across the globe (see posting times and collages). Be sure to check your posting time. The game is open to all who wish to participate. We welcome all levels of skill from beginners to hobbyists to professionals. All you need is a creative mind, a sense of humor, and a willingness to try. You might have heard it through the ape vine… This game will have you hooked on the monkey bars. Like a monkey likes a banana… it has that appeal. Come monkey around with us and see what all the fuss is about.

  1. haha, you’re a crack-up Tabs — Wanted to be a fashion designer from the age of 8… to 8-1/2! 😛

I know with various software like ArtRage, Painter, etc, you can zoom in and out, so you could have the whole dress AND the detail, which I’m sure you can’t get on your iDevice. One thought is that you could do multiple “frames” that could mosaic together. Like the top frame you did… but then you could do a frame or more on the rest of the dress if you felt like it. The frames wouldn’t have to match up perfectly, where they “misfit” would just be a slightly cubist joint that would be fun anyway. You could literally patch them together or just present them as separate frames next to each other.

BTW, did you say you have a wacom tablet? I found this cool thread with some software suggestions. At the top you’ll see the Stack Exchange Moderator close the discussion (they love to do that) but ignore that, before they had a chance to kill the discussion, the users actually gave some great answers, including software ranging from Free to more expensive things like Photoshop:

  2. Nice! You’re getting more complex and rich in you drawing with this program! Congrats!

  3. Thank you so much Vanessa for all of your help and advice so far.

I have Photoshop on my laptop but I still haven’t played with it yet. I also now have a little drawing pad thingie that I can attach to my laptop with an electronic pen. I have numerous drawing packages on my iPad that I also haven’t had the time to try as I get too distracted with Draw Something, its so basic I guess.

I do know that soon they will release DS2 for iPad so I am hoping then that the resolution will be sharper. Only time will tell 🙂 At the moment you have to enlarge the screen to draw.

I could attempt the bottom half of the dress but I think I would do my own version of it.

    Thanks again 🙂
