The Crowd
The crowd gathered on the riversides and pointed at the bay. A sailboat slid slowly towards the cemetery, its hoisted sail a mystery. A sudden mist covered the tombstones and an eerie feeling took men and women by surprise. Only the children seemed confident that the empty vessel offered no threat.
To everyone’s surprise, a crowd of spirits emerged from the graves, facing the crowd of people on the opposite shore of the river.
The men and women looked at one another, unsure of what to do, whispering their shock, their fear, their uneasiness. With horror, they saw their children walk across the river towards the cemetery and into the sailboat. The spirits waved goodbye to the children and disappeared back into the tombs, as suddenly as they had appeared.
Mothers, fathers, grandmothers, uncles, everyone hurried towards the cemetery to no avail. A rowboat was fetched and two men rowed it out, trying to catch the sailboat, but it was gone. In the distance, they could still hear the children laughing and singing merrily.
The pain was so immense, that the village was abandoned.
So, many years later, no one witnessed a sailboat sliding slowly towards the cemetery, where the spirits emerged from the tombstones, greeting a crowd of ethereal children.
