Diary #23

MUI WO BEACH, LANTAU ISLAND, HONG KONG, 1989 — Sophomore year. Photography class. hahaha – notice I wrote “depth of field” on the print… unfortunately I think I was actually trying to show shallow depth of field not wide!

B&W wide-framed self-portrait of Vaneeesa Blaylock sitting semi-naked on the edge of a bed in an old house in The New Territories, Hong Kong

THE HAGUE, 2012 — When I think about my undergrad time it feels like all I ever did was dance. It’s funny to find all this old photography I did. Wow. Oh, and gawd, I swear I was not trying to take a naked self-portrait on every island of Hong Kong. Something about these old houses was just so visceral and tactile and you felt such a bodily connection. (as opposed to HKAPA on Hong Kong island which was big city modern)

As a virtual public artist my work invites avatar communities to express their identity, explore their culture, and demand their civil rights.
