SECOND LIFE MAINLAND, Sunday 6 January — at yesterday’s Avatar Pride Parade dress rehearsal here, we encountered tremendous “resistance” (lag) to our parade. Some said it was the worst typhoon since ’07, others said it was worse than passing through the eye of a SaveMe Oh storm. In retrospect I realized that the problem might have been that we were seeking acceptance for avatars on the mainland. Ultimately the mainland is where we want acceptance, if our kind is to reach its true potential here in the 21st century, sooner or later, we do have to face the Vic Gundotra’s of the world. But maybe that’s not the best place to start. University campuses have long been nurturing spaces for new and progressive ideas, for the fostering of civil and human rights, therefore we are officially moving the parade route for next Saturday, 12 January’s Avatar Pride Parade to an American university archipelago where our walk will cross 6 university regions and 2 libraries. We’ll walk from New York to California, then up the California coast, and finally finish our pride walk not far from Chicago.

As you see on the map our walk begins on the campus of Long Island University, then loops around the campus of Long Beach State University, then heads north through 2 regions of Stanford University, the first, Stanford Digital Humanities, and to its north Stanford Library. Continuing north we’ll enter the campus of San Jose State University. North of SJSU are our 2 library regions: Imagination Island and Info Island. After trekking east through these regions we’ll enter our final sim, the campus of Bradley university in Peoria, Illinois, where we’ll loop around the campus and finish at the Bradley U Ice Skating Rink. Bring your skates if you’d like to skate at the afterparty. Music by Ze Moo & co.

By some technological miracle, our intrepid machinimatographer Fuschia Nightfire was able to shoot a video of the dress rehearsal in spite of the horrific server performance. She even captured the “bridge out” missing sim. (and, uh, a truck running me over!)

  1. Great post! I had a lot of fun watching the video! One of the aspects of Second Life I enjoy the most is simply to walk and “be”. This post reawakened that in me! Now I’ll have to attend the Parade! Your fault! 😉

      1. Yes Lizzie, yes Yordie — there are so many things to do in virtual space, but I do find walking to be a very immersive or visceral experience. Caming and flying (and buying stuff on Marketplace) are all often quicker, but nothing beats “moving your body” for an experience of being in the world.

And IDK if it’s related or not, but actually I do like long walks IRL. haha, not so much “holding hands on long walks” (though that’s ok too) but I just mean long rambling treks. I’d take a hike over a house party given the choice. (ohhhh, but hopefully not running into… The Hitcher! Dun dun dun!!!)

        1. Have you ever used on of those Hand Holding HUDs to walk with someone in SL? They are a little tricky but Taka & I walked all through the giant Paris sims (there were like 20 sims). It was sooo romantic, Paris in the Winter. We even had an appartment for our honeymoon. oh my, but i do digress. hahahhaha

          1. Aww, how sweet! Paris. Yay!

Wait, wut? Honeymoon? Who knows about this? What happened? Where are the pix? What’s the SLURL for this love nest? We need forensic details!! 😛

                1. It was an amzing group of sims but probably too ambitious. The Champs Elyssey was exquisite with couture clothing stores. My ex bought me a pile of dresses from Fellini. Ah, memories! and yes, bittersweet up the wazzu.

  3. The video is fantastic! Brought me a lot of smiles, especially watching Vaneeesa walk right over the garbage truck careening out of control towards her. “Like a BOSS!”
    🙂

    1. haha, it’s a let-you-be-you parade! There is no “inappropriate” way to come. Filthy jeans… ball gown… skeleton… tiara… it’s all good!

Bonus points, of course, for dresses from Fellini!

    1. I know. What’s winter without a storm. Why don’t your share the blessings of your wisdom and insight with us peeps down here… do a guest post maybe?
