As it was on Wednesday with the… uh… uninvited addition of the VB Cast, a bunch of poseballs, and a countdown clock.
What a day! To be able to celebrate a major release by the most important artist in SL, and have a consideration of bodies (shapes (identities)) in SL all at the same time!
Oh! Did I just refer to Eloh Eliot as the “most important artist in SL”? Oopsy! This week the self-proclaimed “biggest artist in SL” told me that skin “design” is not art.
What I believe art to be is a critical dialog that reperspectivizes culture using the media of our time. Therefore what is not compelling art for me is taking old RL media like painting and photography and porting them into SL.
I don’t begrudge the peeps who sell skin in an effort to eek out a living, their income, honestly it’s wonderful that they’re able to do that. But by offering such beautiful work under an Open Source license, EE forces all of us to reconsider why we’re here, what we’re doing, and how we find meaning in existence. She invites anyone with the slightest inclination to remix her art and to pass it on as Open Source, or if they choose, Commercial, material, to continue the flow of creativity in myriad, unknown, unchartable, unimaginable ways.
If that’s not the art of the 21st century, I don’t know what is.
Note that I didn’t call EE the “best” artist in SL, only the “most important.” From my travels so far, the “best” artist in SL is Adam Ramona. His sim-scale creation Babel Swarm is, quite simply, the most powerful, sublime, overwhelming, simple, beautiful thing I have ever encountered in this world.
Extraordinary as Babel Swarm is, it is an experience you go have in a Sim. EE’s art does not exist in a sim, it permeates our world. The ubiquity of her releases and their derivatives makes her, by my informal observation, the most pervasive artist in our world. And, by my definition, the “most important artist.”
And having said all that lofty stuff… we now present the VB Cast wearing selections from the new Starlight line, with unexpected, RANDOM shapes.

We had a few particles dropped on us!
Night fell on our foggy rooftop. But then, as it does in SL, day came soon enough. Rebekah had the sweet idea to put on our “normal” shapes (whatever *that* means) for the final minutes.
